There are places in this world that are too cool for school and Maketto is one of them. Housed in the flourishing foodie Mecca that is H Street Maketto has become a beacon of innovation and obsession for patrons. The space houses a cafe, a retail space, and a sit down restaurant, and a very delicious combination of Taiwanese and Cambodian infused cuisine. This place is well work the hike to North East and is very much the place to enjoy a perfect summer dinner with friends and loved ones.
To start I want to note that this place is an architectural dream, the space is reminiscent of a modern British townhouse with large open spaces throughout. The first level houses a retail space/bar/sit down area overlooking into a court yard where one can sit down communal table, which over looks the back building which is home to the Kitchen. The second level is home to the cafe and retail space, it opens to a sweeping balcony that circles the courtyard below. I'm told there was a basement....I can't confirm or deny this, because I didn't go down there.
This particular day we went it was hot and stuffy and we'd been running around the city all day, and had had a market that morning. So hunger and thirst we're our annoying companions that we needed to appease. Luckily Maketto was there to help.
We started off with the famed "Steam" Bun, we went for the Leek version since we were also starting off with the I believe dumplings which we're pork. Both starters were simply perfect. I like big buns and I cannot lie and these were awesome! Perfectly cooked, with the most delicious leek stuffing and a gorgeous plum sauce to accompany them. The dumplings we're probably my favorite dish of the night. They were tender, and season perfectly, the pork was perfectly braised (if that was even the method.) I was semi sad when they were finally off the table.
For our main meal we ordered the Wok Fried Noodles, this dish was pretty heavy. As in it was hot, had tons of whole garlic and was a bit spicy. Don't get me wrong it was delicious and perfect...just not on a super hot summers day....I started melting, legit melting.
Isn't the space just dreamy?
The experience at Maketto is one that every DC'ist needs to try. The menu is the perfect blend of Modern Asian and Classical Asian staples. The space is unbelievably gorgeous and imaginative. I can't wait to go back and actually try the drinks from the cafe and to get a cat out of the vending machine....a toy cat not a real one.
